How to land your first digital marketing job in South Africa (with no experience)

No experience? Get hired anyway. – Careers

Every week we read the digital marketing job ads going out in South Africa. Plenty of them are open to juniors and interns, and some say outright that a strong self-taught portfolio is enough. What employers want is proof that you can do the work. Here is the plan we give everyone who asks us where to start.

1. Pick one skill, not five

“Digital marketing” is not a job title. SEO, email, paid ads, copywriting, e-commerce and conversion optimisation are. Choose the one that suits how you like to work: SEO and CRO suit people who like puzzles and data, copywriting and email suit people who like words, and paid ads suit people who like testing and numbers. You can add a second skill later. Starting with one gets you job-ready months sooner.

2. Learn it properly, with real tasks

Watching videos is not the same as doing the work. Choose learning that makes you produce things: keyword research for a real business, a three-email welcome sequence, an ad set with a budget and targeting. That output becomes your portfolio.

3. Build three portfolio pieces

Three focused pieces beat a long CV. For each one, show the problem, what you did, and the result or what you would measure. Offer a free mini-project to a small business near you, such as a local salon, a church or a friend’s online shop. Real businesses make better case studies than made-up ones.

4. Apply where juniors are welcome

Look for internships, junior coordinator roles, agency assistant roles and remote content roles. Read the ad closely: match your portfolio pieces to the two or three skills they mention most, and say so in your first paragraph. A short, specific application beats a generic one.

5. Get in the room

Many SA marketing jobs are filled through people. Go to free community events, join online communities and ask for feedback on your work. Follow up within 48 hours with anyone you meet. It is the cheapest and fastest way to hear about roles before they are advertised.
