The skills SA employers pay for – Careers

In the first week of October 2026 we listed 10 digital marketing roles on the DMG Career page, from a remote internship to a Pretoria specialist role. We read every ad and counted the skills employers asked for. It is a small sample, not a national survey, but it is a useful snapshot of what real SA employers want right now.

What came up most (out of 10 ads)

  • Copywriting and content: 5 of 10
  • SEO: 4 of 10
  • Paid ads (Google, Meta, TikTok): 4 of 10
  • E-commerce: 4 of 10
  • Email marketing: 3 of 10
  • A/B testing and conversion optimisation: 3 of 10

The pattern behind the list

Almost every ad combined one core skill with the ability to report on results, usually in GA4 or the ad platform’s own analytics. Employers are not looking for people who know a little about everything. They want someone who can own one channel and show what it delivered.

What to do with this

  1. Choose your core skill. If you enjoy writing, copywriting and content had the most demand in this sample. If you like data, SEO and paid ads were close behind.
  2. Add reporting. Learn to set up and read GA4 reports for the channel you choose. It turns “I did the work” into “here is what it achieved”.
  3. Prove it. Build two or three portfolio pieces that show both the work and the numbers.

Each DMG course is built around one of these skills, with real tasks you can put in a portfolio, from R950. See the career roadmaps, or browse this week’s jobs to see the skills in context.
