How to get the most out of a marketing event (even if you hate networking)

One good event can do more for your career than fifty job applications. The trick is to go with a plan. This one works even if small talk makes you want to leave early.
Before you go
- Update your LinkedIn headline to say what you do or want to do, for example “Junior SEO specialist | content and keyword research”.
- Prepare one sentence about yourself. “I’m learning SEO and I’ve just finished a keyword project for a local salon” is enough.
- Pick two talks or people you most want to hear or meet, and one question for each.
While you’re there
- Aim for three real conversations, not thirty business cards.
- Ask, then listen. “What are you working on at the moment?” opens most conversations.
- Connect on LinkedIn on the spot so you don’t lose the contact.
Within 48 hours
- Follow up with each person and mention something specific you spoke about.
- Share one takeaway from the event on LinkedIn and tag the speaker or organiser.
- Write down what you learned and one thing you’ll try this week.
